There are many ways to begin understanding EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). A basic outline of it is that generally in counselling sessions you talk. With EMDR therapy another component is added, it’s called Bilateral Stimulation. This stimulation may be a soft beat you listen to, or a visual you watch. As you listen to or watch this bilateral (side-to-side) stimulation, a natural process in the brain is activated. This activation allows you to process specific pieces of information that are causing you distress by moving it from one part of your brain to another, resulting in less or no distress with that specific memory, incident or emotion.
This gentle process can benefit many people. You can come to counselling (done online) with a vague notion of wanting to feel better, and EMDR can help us fine-tune how. Using EMDR we also have the capacity to be very targeted in our time. So, if you have something specific you want to heal from, move past, overcome, grow-in or strengthen, EMDR can allow us to focus on that topic, and move towards that goal.
As a therapist I am trained in this approach because my counsellor used it in my sessions with me and it impacted my life. I was trained in EMDR so I can provide the same gift to you. If you would like to learn more about EMDR and try it or to discuss if this is the right support for you in this time please reach out.
